A First-Timer's Guide to Attending a New Century Chamber Orchestra Concert

If you’re attending a New Century Chamber Orchestra concert for the first time, welcome! Our concerts offer a dynamic experience, combining classical masterpieces with innovative contemporary music, all performed without a conductor. To help you get the most out of your visit, here’s a guide for first-time concertgoers on what to expect, how to prepare, and how to fully enjoy this unforgettable experience of live music.

How Do I Find the Concert Venue?

Our concerts are performed at different venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Familiarize yourself with the concert location for your performance, and plan your mode of transportation, directions, and parking in advance.

When Should I Arrive for the Concert?

The Box Office will open 45 minutes prior to the start of the performance, and the doors to the concert venue will open 30 minutes prior. Plan to arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of the concert, allowing ample time to find your seat, explore the concert program, and settle in before the performance begins. Each program contains information about the concert’s music and the musicians, which can enrich your experience and make the music even more meaningful.

What Should I Wear to the Concert?

Wondering what to wear to a chamber orchestra concert? There’s no strict dress code! Many attendees like to dress up, but casual attire is also welcome. The goal is to make you feel comfortable, so dress in a way that feels right for you.

On stage, you will find our members of the orchestra wear a variety of all-black looks to create a uniform ensemble. Daniel Hope and other solo performers are invited to wear whatever expresses their personality.

What Should I Expect During the Performance?

Before the concert begins, silence your phone and let yourself relax and focus on the live music. During the concert, the audience usually remains quiet to fully absorb the performance, creating a shared, immersive experience.

At New Century Chamber Orchestra, our musicians perform without a traditional conductor, relying instead on the artistic leadership of world-renowned Music Director and Concertmaster Daniel Hope. This conductorless format makes our performances feel alive and collaborative, with the musicians connecting closely with each other and the audience.

Expect a mix of classical pieces and modern compositions, performed with vibrancy and precision. Each concert is designed to be accessible, so whether you’re a seasoned listener or new to classical music, you’ll find yourself immersed in an engaging, approachable concert experience.

When Should I Clap?

If you’re unsure when to clap, don’t worry—it’s a common question! Typically, applause is reserved for the end of each complete piece rather than between individual movements (sections within a piece). When the concertmaster or musicians signal the end with a nod or by lowering their instruments, that’s your cue to show your appreciation. If you’re still in doubt, follow the lead of other audience members.

Sometimes, an individual movement is so spectacular that members of the audience feel moved to applaud when it ends; don't feel embarrassed if this happens to you! The performers on stage welcome your appreciation whenever you feel moved to offer it.

May I Take Photo or Video During the Performance?

No photo or video is permitted during the performance. However, during the final applause, you may snap a quick photo if you would like to capture a memento from your New Century visit.

How Can I Get the Most Out of the Concert Experience?

Attending a live music concert is all about being present and engaged. Don’t feel pressured to understand every musical term or analyze every note; instead, let yourself be carried away by the experience. The goal is to enjoy the energy, artistry, and emotion the musicians bring to the stage. Whether you’re moved by a specific melody or a quiet, reflective moment, there’s no wrong way to experience a concert with us.

What Happens When the Performance Ends?

After the performance, many people like to linger in the hall to take in the atmosphere or chat with fellow attendees. Musicians or staff members may be available to greet the audience and answer questions, so feel free to share your thoughts and engage with them.
