Educational Outreach

As a part of the New Century Chamber Orchestra’s dedication to the future of music, the organization provides a music education program, String Quartet Encounters, free of charge to elementary school students in Marin County.
String Quartet Encounters are highly-dynamic 45 minute long presentations based on California Visual and Performing Arts Standards, led by a quartet of musicians from the New Century Chamber Orchestra. The Quartet Encounters feature a performance by the quartet, interspersed with discussion, question and answer periods, hands-on demonstration, and opportunities for students to get up-close and personal with the instruments.
In the 2012-2013 school year, the New Century Chamber Orchestra expanded the scope of the program, and increased the String Quartet Encounters from two to nine elementary schools in Marin Country. New Century provided eighteen total String Quartet Encounters, including two at each of the following elementary schools in the Sausalito / Marin City Unified School District and San Rafael Unified School District: Willow Creek Academy, Bayside, Bahia Vista, San Pedro, Coleman, Glenwood, Sun Valley, Laurel Dell, and Venetia Valley Elementary Schools. The program currently reaches over 1500 students, primarily in the third through fifth grades, and is targeted at underserved students in the county whenever possible.
As our program grows, your support is especially important. $500 underwrites bus transportation for students to attend a New Century Chamber Orchestra concert and $1,000 underwrites a classroom visit from New Century’s string quartet.
