About the Concert
”A pianist who balances qualities of excitement and spontaneity with clarity and elegance” (The New York Times), Anne-Marie McDermott has played concertos, recitals and chamber music in hundreds of cities throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. In a special treat, Ms. McDermott joins New Century in a piano concerto by Mozart and Chausson’s Concert for Piano, Violin and String Quartet, Op. 21, continuing the tradition of a long standing collaboration with Music Director Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg.
About the Soloist
Pianist Anne-Marie McDermott is a consummate artist who balances a versatile career as a soloist and collaborator. The breadth of Ms. McDermott’s repertoire matches that of her instrument, spanning from Bach, Haydn and Beethoven to Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Scriabin to works by today’s most influential composers. She has premiered dozens of works, including a piano sonata written for her by Charles Wuorinen.
In 2011, Ms. McDermott was made Artistic Director of the Vail Music Festival, a festival that hosts the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Dallas Symphony, in addition to presenting over 40 chamber music concerts throughout the summer. She is also Artistic Director of the Ocean Reef Chamber Music Festival in Florida and The Avila Chamber Music Celebration in Curacao. Most recently, she was appointed Curator for Chamber Music at the Mainly Mozart Festival in San Diego.
Anne-Marie McDermott has performed with many leading orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, National Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, and Baltimore Symphony, among others. She was named an artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in 1995 and performs and tours extensively with CMS each season.
Ms. McDermott’s performances with the New Century Chamber Orchestra continue the tradition of a long standing collaboration with New Century Music Director Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. As a duo, they have released a CD titled “Live” on the NSS label and plan to release the Complete Brahms Violin and Piano Sonatas. Anne-Marie last performed with New Century in March 2009, as part of Nadja’s inaugural season as Music Director. The “Glory of Russia” concert included Ms. McDermott on piano in Prokofiev’s Visions Fugitives, Op. 22 and Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor, Op. 35.
Ms. McDermott studied at the Manhattan School of Music and was a winner of the Young Concert Artists Auditions and the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Development Award. Her most recent activity includes a debut at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig performing Bernstein’s Age of Anxiety with the MDR Orchestra; concerts with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center at Wigmore Hall in London, Aarhus and Hamburg; a performance of Schumann’s Piano Concerto in the Cartegena International Music Festival; and the release of her fourth acclaimed recording – an all-Chopin disc – on Bridge Records.
